Teenage depression strikes hundreds of thousands of adolescents today who feel trapped in a world of despair. Teenage and pre-teen depression has many causes. In some instances genetics plays a role. In other situations depression can be ÒtriggeredÓ by events that include divorce between Mom and Dad, physical or sexual abuse, adoption, or a death in the family. In each case the end result is a young woman who questions herself and her self worth, who just doesnÕt feel Ògood enough.Ó Some typical byproducts of teenage depression and this low self-esteem are eating disorders, self harm Ñ usually in the form of Òcutting,Ó oppositional defiance, parent/child conflict, sexual activity, alcohol or drug abuse, and/or suicide attempts. Unfortunately, girls are increasingly turning to these destructive behaviors at younger ages than in the past.
